Taking Broadway to the Silver Screen

From casting to reimagining, editing to dubbing, the road to making a successful screen adaptation of a Broadway musical isn’t easy. In this lecture, Debra Dickinson will give guests a behind-the-scenes look at some of the biggest blockbuster transfers from stage to screen.

  • The Sound of Music: How did a somewhat saccharin star vehicle for Mary Martin turn into one of the biggest movie hits ever, breaking box office records in 29 countries?
  • West Side Story: Jerome Robbins’ Broadway masterpiece wasn’t a smash hit until it became a movie – and he was fired from co-directing it halfway through filming.
  • Cabaret: Hal Prince’s dark and innovative Broadway musical becomes Bob Fosse’s groundbreaking Oscar-winning movie after drastic alterations to plot, music. and characters.
